Ever daydream about TV crews demolishing your kitchen and putting in reclaimed wood cabinets and solar panels on the roof? Sorry, that’s me fantasizing again. Until Extreme Makeover: Green Edition comes a-knockin’, it’s best to take matters into your own hands.

But first things first. Be a responsible renovator. Don’t just gut and build at will. If the existing wood floors work, leave ’em. Ripping them out to install imported bamboo because it’s the new thing to do ain’t the right thing to do. And if you do decide to purge the whole kitchen or bathroom, make sure you recycle all construction waste properly. Try donating usable pieces to Habitat for Humanity’s ReStores or posting them on Kijiji.ca or craigslist.org, and while you’re at it, look for second-hand materials you can use in your own home. And most importantly, do the stuff that’ll shrink your energy use and, consequently, your home’s greenhouse gas footprint, first. No polar bear will drown if you don’t get new counter-tops installed.
